I created the card art for 3 of the Primal Gods for this newest expansion to Runebound. These were incredibly fun to work on.

Girl, in Greek Myth, Arachne was a woman. (Sorry, I'm just nit-picky when it comes to details.)

Thanks! I love painting 'magic'. Hard to mess up and always fun to play around with.

Thought it really needed some wild texture or pattern... to spice it up. Glad you are digging it! :)

Your monsters rule man! Did you design all of these guys? I'm curious what the thought process is like in doing so (maybe it can help me with my own monsters)

Thanks so much. Yes, I designed all of these. I was basically given the description, "Primal God: Snake. Design a Primal God with the aspect of a snake" for each of these and left to my own devices. The first thoughts I had (since there was a snake and crocodile) was of ancient Egypt for theme. I ran that by the game designer who said the feel of Egypt is fine but not a direct reference. The game is of high fantasy but not based on Earth. So I looked at a lot of images of ancient Egypt (hieroglyphs, paintings, illustrations of dress, etc) and a lot of image of snakes, crocodiles and spiders. I decided that a snake (to me at least) would use magic and physical attacks, a spider would mostly use magic and a huge burly crocodile would use physical attacks. I tried to come up with really dynamic posses and tried to play up the aspects of the fierce animal nature while making them seem intelligent. And of course tried my best to make them cool and have fun. That is about it. Decided on a theme that I tried to carry through with them and then looked at a lot on reference of the actual animal and made my own. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any further questions.

After taking another look at your beasties I can see the Egyptian theme (especially the snake one) yet it doesn't scream Egyptian (nice job ;) ) Incorporating an existing culture as a base sounds like a great idea, I usually try to wing my designs for clothing/armor/etc but I should really try looking at more reference material before I start making marks. Thanks a lot for the thorough reply Chris! I'll try to incorporate these methods in my future design work. If I come up with any more questions down the road I'll be sure to ask as long as you have the time to answer, thanks for the offer :)
